How to Clean and Lube Your Motorcycle Chain

Materials:
- Chain cleaner
- Chain brush
- Soft cloth or microfiber towel
- Chain lubricant
- Disposable gloves (optional)
Steps:
- Park the motorcycle on its center stand or use a paddock stand to lift the rear wheel off the ground.
- Put on disposable gloves (optional) to avoid getting your hands dirty.
- Use a chain cleaner spray to clean the chain. Spray it evenly onto the chain and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help loosen and remove dirt, grime, and old chain lube.
- Use a chain brush to scrub the chain, running it back and forth along the chain’s length. Be sure to clean all areas of the chain, including the inside of the links, sprockets, and rear wheel.
- After scrubbing the chain, use a soft cloth or microfiber towel to wipe away the chain cleaner and the dirt that has come off the chain.
- Allow the chain to dry completely before applying new chain lube. It’s important to ensure that the chain is completely dry, as any remaining moisture can cause the new chain lube to not adhere to the chain properly.
- Apply the chain lube. Apply a small amount of chain lube to the inside of the chain while slowly turning the rear wheel. Be sure to apply the chain lube evenly, making sure it reaches all parts of the chain, including the inside of the links.
- Allow the chain lube to set for a few minutes. This will give it time to penetrate the chain properly and set in.
- Wipe away any excess chain lube with a soft cloth or microfiber towel. Excess chain lube can attract dirt and dust, which can cause the chain to wear out faster.
- After applying the new chain lube, it’s important to regularly maintain the chain by cleaning and lubricating it every 500-1000 miles or as needed based on riding conditions.
That’s it! Following these steps should help keep your motorcycle chain clean and lubricated, improving its longevity and performance.
